The term Gen Z has become more than just the name of a generation. Today, it has become a label people casually use to describe a generation as confused, impatient, or irresponsible. Maybe they are not entirely wrong. Yes, many of us are confused. Yes, we are the generation that has made its personal life public through social media. But I don’t believe these qualities alone define who we are. This is not a research paper, but simply a reflection based on my own observations as someone who belongs to Gen Z.
We are growing up between two completely opposite realities. One side of our generation is constantly learning new skills, chasing opportunities, and doing everything possible to survive in this AI-driven world. The other side is still searching for its place. Somewhere between intense competition and the fear of being left behind, many of us are simply trying to understand ourselves.
That pressure becomes even stronger when we begin comparing our lives with everyone else’s. Every day, LinkedIn celebrates another achievement. Someone gets a dream job, wins a scholarship, launches a startup, or reaches another milestone. While one person celebrates success, another quietly begins to question their own worth. We compare our first chapter with someone else’s tenth chapter and slowly convince ourselves that we are already too late.
Constant comparison creates another problem; we slowly stop trusting ourselves. We keep waiting for someone to tell us which career to choose, which skill to learn, and what dream to follow. Instead of exploring our own path, we look for someone else’s roadmap. But life has never come with a personal instructor, and waiting only keeps us standing still.
In the middle of this confusion, many of us also become obsessed with fitting in. We follow trends, lifestyles, and even career choices simply because everyone else seems to be doing the same. We become so busy trying to look “cool” that we slowly lose our own identity.
The strange part is that we appear confident. We build impressive profiles, post perfect pictures, and make it seem as though everything is under control. Behind that confidence, however, many of us are simply scared, scared of failing, scared of being left behind, and scared of admitting that we don’t actually have everything figured out. We have become experts at hiding our emotions while pretending to be unbothered.
Social media is only one source of pressure. Expectations also come from the people closest to us. Many of us grow up carrying dreams that are not entirely our own. Those expectations are usually built with love, but they can slowly become a burden when they leave little room for us to discover our own dreams. At the same time, we keep changing our minds and postponing today’s decisions until tomorrow, making the journey even more confusing.
This article is not an excuse for Gen Z, nor is it an attempt to prove that our generation has it harder than any other. Every generation faces its own challenges, and this is simply ours.
Perhaps Gen Z will not be remembered for having all the answers, but for having the courage to discover its own identity in a world that never stopped changing.
