Wearable technology in healthcare refers to the electronic devices we wear to assess and collect data, monitor health conditions, or provide therapeutic assistance. These devices are generally equipped with special sensors to track vital parameters, such as heart rate, pulse rate, oxygen in blood, physical activity, and glucose levels. The best thing about wearables is that they can be connected to smartphones or other devices that provide real-time feedback, which can be used for the early diagnosis of major diseases. These devices are beneficial because they are easily accessible and readily available.Common examples of wearable technology in healthcare include smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch, fitness trackers such as Fitbit, and glucose monitors like the Freestyle Libre. These devices help track heart rate, activity levels, sleep, and blood sugar, making health monitoring more accessible and convenient.

TYPES OF MEDICAL WEARABLES

With the continuous evolution of technology, new types of devices have emerged almost every day in the market. Today, we will look at readily available devices on the shelf.

  1. FITNESS TRACKERS

Starting with old fitness trackers. This was one of the first examples of its kind. While it has evolved with the current technology, it has covered much of the market and provided health data such as heart and pulse rates. It also records physical status, such as step count, calories burnt, and sleep stages. Ex- Fitbit.

  1. SMARTWATCHES

This is the modern and best version of fitness trackers, as it contains additional features, such as stress trackers and other physical activities. It can also be connected to smartphones, providing easy access to notifications and calls. It not only helps in healthcare but also looks stylish. Ex-Apple Watch.

  1. HEARING AIDS

These small electronic devices are worn in or behind the ears to increase sound for individuals with hearing loss. They have evolved with time and have features such as noise cancellation. Ex- Behind-the-ear (BTE).

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF WEARABLES

Wearable devices have made it easier to keep an eye on human health. Whether tracking steps, monitoring sleep, or checking heart rate, these gadgets provide helpful insights throughout the day. They are simple to use, often look great, and can reduce the need for frequent doctor visits by supporting remote monitoring. However, these are not perfect. Sometimes, the data are not entirely accurate, and there are concerns about how safely our health information is stored. In addition, it is important to remember that devices cannot replace professional medical advice. However, for many people, wearables are a great step toward building better health habits and staying more connected to their health metrics.

IMPLEMENTING WEARABLES IN INDIA’S HEALTHCARE.

Wearable technology can transform healthcare in India, making it more accessible, efficient, and personalized. In countries like the United States and Japan, wearables are already playing a significant role in everyday health monitoring—helping people track things like heart rate, sleep patterns, and physical activity and even alerting doctors to potential health issues before they become serious. Integrating wearables could offer a game-changing solution in India, where healthcare resources can be stretched, especially in rural areas. These devices can help with early diagnosis, reduce hospital visits, and enable people to care better for their health from the comfort of their homes. By examining how other countries have implemented wearables, India can create a tailored approach that benefits individuals and the healthcare system.

FUTURE OF WEARABLES IN HEALTHCARE

The future of healthcare wearables looks exciting and full of potential. These devices are becoming more innovative, reliable, and easier for people to use daily. A great example is the Apple Watch, which goes beyond tracking steps. It monitors your heart rate, can perform an ECG, and even detects if you have had a fall. If it notices any irregularities with your heart, it sends alerts, helping users catch potential health issues early and stay more in tune with their well-being. From tracking your heart rate to helping spot health issues early, they make staying on top of your well-being easier. Despite a few challenges, wearable devices are expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. More companies are stepping in because this space offers vast opportunities to make healthcare more accessible and proactive. With the help of innovative features and better data tools, wearables will continue to give us deeper insights into our health. A great example is Fitbit, which blends health tracking with a sleek design, helping users stay active, sleep better, and understand their bodies more meaningfully.
