Unplug to Recharge: Why Social Media Breaks Work Like a Power Nap

As MBA students, we are constantly juggling classes, assignments, projects, networking, and the pressure to stay updated with the latest industry trends. In the middle of all this, social media often feels like both a blessing and a burden. On one hand, it connects us, inspires us, and even helps us learn. On the other hand, endless scrolling can sometimes trigger feelings of FOMO (Fear of missing out), heartbreak reminders, or even comparison-based jealousy.

This is where the idea of a “social media power nap” comes in. Just as a short nap refreshes our body and mind, a temporary break from social media allows us to step back, breathe, and return with renewed energy.

Why Take a Social Media Break?

  1. Mental Reset: Social media is not inherently negative. But when certain content triggers emotions like seeing peers achieve something you haven’t yet, or stumbling upon personal memories during a vulnerable time it can feel mentally exhausting. A break acts like hitting the reset button.
  2. Productivity Boost: MBA life already demands high focus. Constant notifications dilute that focus. A short detox period helps in regaining clarity and channeling energy toward tasks that matter.
  3. Improved Well-being: Just as we manage time, finances, and resources, managing our digital exposure is also crucial. Disconnecting for even a few hours can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and help us prioritize real-world connections.
  4. Perspective Shift: Social media often portrays only the highlight reels of people’s lives. Pausing for a while helps us regain perspective and realize that everyone faces struggles behind the screen.

How to Practice a “Power Nap” Detox

  • Set a Duration: It doesn’t need to be weeks. Even a few hours or a day without social media can feel refreshing.
  • Use Substitution: Replace scrolling with activities that stimulate creativity or calmness like journaling, exercising, or simply catching up with peers offline.
  • Reflect, Don’t Escape: The goal isn’t to “quit” social media, but to use it mindfully after a break, with stronger self-control.

In the MBA journey, where stress and deadlines are constant, social media breaks are not about running away from reality but about recharging to face it better. Think of it as a strategic pause, much like a power nap short, intentional, and highly effective.
